Jeans + jumper = my go-to fashion formula. For work, I will dress it up with boots and blazer, for warmer weather swap to tee and sandals. Basically, I have a comfort zone and although I love to step out of it, on those busy weekdays I use my formula for speed and ease. That’s why I am always keen on the trends that work within my style parameters. The items that slot right into my current wardrobe without any fuss or need to buy extras, yet elevate the clothes I have worn for years. Recently white jeans have been this secret ingredient.
I must admit, I put off buying white jeans for a good few months. Apart from the fact that jeans are almost* the trickiest item to shop for on the high street, there were another 2 reasons I didn’t want to buy them: my 2 year olds grubby little paws and the niggling doubt in my mind that I could end up looking like I’m trying to channel Liz Hurley circa 1995. Now there isn’t much I can do about the first reason but there are a few KEY essentials that will avoid white jeans looking dated and deeply unflattering (no offence Liz). *Swimwear wins that trophy.
COLOUR: Stark, pure, bright white can be harsh and unflattering. Off-white, ecru or natural white is less scary, less 90’s and easier to keep clean.
SHAPE: Skinnies are unforgiving at the best of times but in white you will feel practically naked. Go for a high or mid waist, a mom-style, boyfriend or, my personal favourite, a straight leg jean. A looser shape will keep the look modern and stop unsightly bunching round the knees and groin.
FABRIC: A thicker denim with less stretch will stop the pockets showing through and keep the look chic rather than trashy. Check the elastane to cotton ration, 1% – 2% elastane gives a little stretch, if you like your denim more stiff, or vintage-looking, try 100% cotton.
Our High Street Faves are all under £60 because we truly believe you don’t need to spend a fortune to get decent denim:

HOW TO WEAR
I am still looking for the perfect vintage white Levi 901’s but until then I have found an excellent alternative: Lindex cropped jeans (styled 3 ways below). I love the button fly and the straight shape. NB: these come up very small, size up !
Neutrals & Animal: White jeans work well with 2 current trends: neutrals (beige/camel/brown) and animal print.
Suited & Booted: A blazer or tailored coat are lifted by swapping out regular jeans for white.
Casual denim: White jeans look great with all your weekend basics: denim jackets, tees, trainers, sweaters.
Cannot wait to wear white jeans with sandals, pretty blouses and basket bags in summer…
